Summer Term 2025
Dosbarth Y Garn enjoyed taking part in our basecamp day to introduce our topic "Time Traveller". We went back in time to a Victorian era school and experienced a day in the life of a child in Victorian Times. Our teachers dressed up in Victorian style dress and our classroom was transformed. We had to use chalk boards to complete some of our work, we had strict rules to follow including keeping our hands clean at all times and we even had a Dunces hat in case we miss-behaved. The children came up with 3 enquiry questions to focus our learning and these were:
What was life like for my Nan and Grampy - What did they wear, what toys did they have?
How am I different from when I was a baby - what has changed?
How is our school different from schools in the past?
We were lucky to have a visit from Nancy and her mum, Miss O'brien who showed us all the different things Nancy needs as a baby. We got to ask her lots of questions too. We were also really lucky to have some of our Grandparents come to visit us and tell us all about what life was like for them growing up. They told us all about the toys they played with and the schools they went to. We also learned all about the different family traditions they had and we talked about our own family traditions.
We made our own toys from the past like dioramas and spinning tops and we even made our own kites, that we got to fly in the school yard.
We have also enjoyed:
Learning some of Aesop's fables during our PE lessons
Listening to and reading old stories and nursery rhymes
We have looked at fiction and non fiction books, using the index pages to help us find different facts
Listening to and then sequencing old stories
Writing a letter to friends on 'old parchment' paper
developing our own story lines in our pretend play and using conversations to help us solve problems
We finished off our topic with a wonderful visit to St Fagan's where we took part in a brilliant toy workshop. We had a chance to play with lots of old toys and to see and touch some very old toys from long ago.
Our Experiences
Reception Autumn Newsletter 2023
Dosbarth Y Garn have enjoyed our topic this term 'Our World, Our Planet!'.
Question 1: What different types of plants and animals live around our planet?
Question 2: What's the weather like in different part of our planet?
Question 3: How are people different around the world?
Using our 'Base Camp' day as a springboard for ideas, we decided to travel around the world visiting four different types of Biomes. First stop on our trip was to a tropical rainforest where we 'visited' the amazing Amazon Rain Forest. We learned all about the beautiful and strange plants and animals that live there. We made jungle animal masks and compared the different creatures of the Amazon to the ones we see here at home!
Next we decided to visit the vast African plains and stopped off in the wonderful Masai Mara! Here we learned all about the nomadic Masai Warriors, how and where they live and how they live alongside some of the world's most feared creatures, like Lions! We made stunning Masai Warrior jewellery and ventured into our own Masai Mara wilderness (Our school field!) where we made our very own Masai hut and danced and sang like Masai warriors.
Our next stop was the the treacherous but amazing Sahara desert where we looked at the extreme weather and how the different animals who live there, survive! For one week, we studied the weather there and compared it to our own weather, here in Cefn Cribwr!
Our last stop, and just in time for Christmas, was to the freezing Artic tundra. Here we looked at the animals that live there and learned how they have adapted to live in such freezing climates. We also looked at how the areas where they live are slowly disappearing due to climate change and global warming.
Each time we visited a different area of the planet, we made a diorama to showcase all of knowledge and what we had learned!
Our science experiment to see how much water camels actually drink in 1 minute!!
Comparing the weather in the Sahara desert with Cefn Cribwr.
Cynefin - We talked about what Cynefin meant to us and compared it to what it might mean for the Masai Warrior Tribes people.
